Single Keyword Ad Groups, also known as SKAGs, is a strategy that puts one keyword in each of your campaign’s ad groups, giving you more control over raising click-through rates, managing bids, and achieving high Quality Scores. This is available both for Google Ads and Microsoft Ads.

Creating New Ad Groups

After selecting a suggestion, you can choose to create a SKAG (Single Keyword Ad Group) structure for that suggestion.

The SKAG feature will copy over any existing tracking templates and for campaigns with automated bidding, it will set the keyword bids to the CPC value of the search term.

First, you will be prompted to select in which campaign you want to create the SKAG.

After selecting the campaign, you'll be prompted to enter the name of the new ad group.

Keyword Insertion

You can use keyword insertion along with static text to define a template that creates multiple ad groups. The options for insertion are {sourceadgroup}, {keyword} and {matchtype}.

For example, if you enter:

  • 'New - {keyword} - {matchtype}' in the ad group name, the system will create a new ad group for each keyword and match type variation. This will result in a SKAG (Single Keyword Ad Group) structure where each keyword that is selected will be in a different ad group. A sample ad group name would be 'New - Optmyzr - Phrase'.

  • 'New - {keyword}' in the ad group name, the system will create a new ad group for each different keyword. If the same search term is selected in multiple match types, all the keywords irrespective of match type will be grouped into one ad group.

  • 'New - {KeyWord}' in the ad group name, the system will create a new ad group for each different keyword according to the way they are written. Here are some examples:

         - 'New - {KeyWord}' = 'New - Nike Shoes'

         - 'New - {Keyword}' = 'New - Nike shoes'

         - 'New - {keyword}' = 'New - nike shoes'

  • 'New - {matchtype}' in the ad group name, the system will create new ad groups for each different match type. All search terms with the same match type will be grouped into one ad group. A sample ad group name would be 'New - Phrase'.

The SKAG feature in the Keyword Lasso also supports using the source ad group name as an insertion pattern through {sourceadgroup}.

  • {sourceadgroup} - {keyword} In the new ad groups created, the system will use the ad group name from where the suggestion was originally triggered and will create new ad groups for each different keyword.

Uploading the Changes

After clicking OK, you will notice that the search terms have been arranged properly. All the search terms that will be grouped according to one insertion will show up as shown below. In the example below, the insertion is by {keyword}-{matchtype} so all the search terms with exact match type will be in the same ad group and those with phrase match type will be in a different ad group. If you see the insertion text in the ad group name, it means all the search terms showing under it will be arranged as defined.

Upload changes to Google Ads by clicking on 'Add Selected Keywords to Account'. This will show a confirmation box after which changes will get uploaded to Google Ads.
