What is it?

The Product Group Refresher helps keep Microsoft Ads Shopping campaigns in sync with the merchant feed. It can run on all ad groups in the campaign together, which makes it much more efficient to use when you have many ad groups.

How does it work?

The system first detects the structure or format in which ad groups and product groups were created in the campaign.

It then finds all the new products in your feed which don't have any product groups created, and recommends creating new product groups or ad groups for them based on the existing campaign structure.

It also finds product groups that are no longer present in the feed and suggests removing them.

These suggestions can be applied with a single click directly to Microsoft Ads.

The Product Group Refresher only recommends product groups when the associated 'Everything Else' group is included. If it is excluded, the tool will ignore new products that were added to the feed under that split because the assumption is that anything that falls into 'Everything Else' should not show ads.

Note: If the system can't find a well defined consistent structure in the Shopping Campaign, it won't be able to recommend how the new products should be split out into product groups.

Inventory Filters

The Product Group Refresher respects the inventory filters that are set up in your Microsoft Ads account, and it will only recommend new ad groups and product groups based on those criteria.

Keep in mind that if you have been using inventory filters, and for any given reason decide to remove them, the products in your shopping campaign will be made available again, so when the Product Group Refresher runs, it’ll create new ad groups for them. This happens because the tool will consider them to be “new” products, as the products did not have existing ad groups in the current structure.

Getting Recommendations

  1. Add Prefix (Eg: Format like "AD - " i.e. "ADspacebar-spacebar") to the ad group names in the Microsoft Ads interface for Product Group Refresher to identify them.

  2. Once you have pre-fix in place, you can run Shopping Campaign Builder by choosing the split - Brand > Item ID, with ad group creation strategy set to an ad group for each Brand. In the apply window, you can use the "Restructure Existing Ad Groups" option by specifying the same ad group prefix. This will create a consistent structure for your campaign throughout and it will also retain the performance data for your product groups.

  3. Going forward, since you'll have a consistent campaign structure and ad groups names with pre-fix, the Product Group Refresher will be able to give you all the suggestions for adding new ad groups and product groups.
