PMax Asset Optimization - User Guide

Written by Anshika Srivastava

What is It?

PMax Asset Optimization gives you asset-level visibility into your Google Ads Performance Max campaigns.

The tool pulls all text, image, and video assets from across your PMax asset groups into one place, so you can assess creative performance without clicking through each campaign and asset group individually in the Google Ads platform.

The tool covers headlines, long headlines, and descriptions across campaigns and asset groups, clearly distinguishes auto-created videos from ones you've uploaded, and gives you recommended next steps — keep, pause, replace, or refresh — for each asset.

Note: While you can view image and video assets, the tool does not currently allow you to take any actions.

Where to Find It?

Go to Audits & Insights > Ads & Creatives Analysis > PMax Asset Optimization from the left-side menu.

You can also navigate to the tool from Manage and Optimize > Ads & Creatives > PMax Asset Optimization.

Why Use It?

This tool closes the visibility gap in PMax creative management. It helps you understand which of your Performance Max campaign assets are actually working.

You can:

  1. See text asset performance across campaigns and asset groups in one view, instead of opening each asset group in Google Ads one at a time.

  2. Compare assets within an asset group and instantly spot your top and poor performers.

  3. Tell auto-created videos apart from the ones you've uploaded, so you know exactly what Google generated on your behalf.

  4. Act on clear, prioritized recommendations (keep, pause, replace, refresh) instead of guessing what to change.

  5. Edit or replace assets in bulk, and copy your winning assets to other asset groups, cutting down on repetitive manual work.

How Does It Work?

The tool is organized into four tabs, all scoped to the campaigns you've selected in the left-hand campaign filter.

  1. Asset Groups

  2. Headlines

  3. Long Headlines

  4. Descriptions

Asset Groups Tab

This is the main view. Each row is an asset group, showing:

  • Assets — a thumbnail preview of the images and videos in that group, plus a look at the headlines and descriptions in use.

  • Ad Strength — Google's Poor/Average/Good/Excellent rating for the asset group.

  • Recommendations — a direct link to what the asset group needs, such as "Add 6 more headlines" or "Edit assets."

  • Campaign name and Status.

  • Key Performance Indicators like impressions, clicks, and CTR.

You can customize the table and add more metrics using the column selector in the top-right corner.

Note: Use Smart Filter for easy filtering. You'll see options like 'Poor Ad Strength', 'Needs Attention', or 'asset groups that need more headlines, long headlines, or descriptions'.

Hovering over an asset group reveals two icons:

  • The eye (Preview) icon shows how your assets combine into real ad previews across Search, Display, and Gmail placements.

  • The pencil (Edit) icon opens the bulk asset editor for that group.

Headlines, Long Headlines, and Descriptions Tabs

These tabs break every individual text asset out into its own list across all the campaigns and asset groups you've selected, along with its Recommendations and Status (Eligible or Not Eligible).

You can turn on the Combine Identical option to collapse the same piece of copy used across multiple asset groups into a single row, and add performance metric columns the same way you would on the Asset Groups tab.

Hovering over a row on any of these three tabs gives you a quicker path to editing that specific headline/long headline/description. Clicking the pencil icon next to a single asset opens a small dialog, with its own character count and its own AI suggestions list.

Date Range

All metrics across the four tabs reflect the date range you select in the picker at the top of the page. The tool opens to Last 30 Days by default.

The date range picker lets you choose from six categories: Last N Days, Day, Week, Month, Business, and Custom, each with its own preset options. You can also enter an exact range using the Start date and End date fields or select dates directly from the calendar.

Note: The exact end date can lag behind today by a day or two. Turn on Offset by to shift the entire date range back by a specified number of days to account for conversion delays.

Bulk-Editing an Asset Group

Clicking Edit assets or the pencil icon on any of the tabs opens a side panel, showing:

  • An Ad Strength meter

  • An Asset Coverage checklist for Headlines, Long Headlines, and Descriptions. A green check means you have enough of that asset type, and a warning icon tells you you're falling short and exactly how many more you need.

  • Tabs for Headlines, Long Headlines, Descriptions, Images, and Videos, where you can edit existing copy or images, add new ones (with live character counts), and see AI Suggestions* generated alongside your assets to help you fill gaps quickly.

  • An Update button to push your changes back to the live campaign.

*How AI Suggestions Are Built

When you open the bulk asset editor and select AI Suggestions, Optmyzr uses two sources to generate each suggestion:

  1. Your top-performing copy: Optmyzr looks at Performance Max text assets of the same type across all PMax campaigns in the account and uses the strongest performers as writing examples. For example, a headline suggestion for one asset group may be influenced by a high-performing headline from another asset group or campaign.

  2. Your landing page: Optmyzr uses the asset group's final URL to understand what you're offering and keep the suggested copy relevant to the landing page.

Note: Performance data is not provided to the AI model. Suggestions are not optimized based on your conversion data.

Copying Winning Assets and Alerts

Once you've identified a top performer in one asset group, you can copy it over to other asset groups instead of recreating it from scratch. You can do this using the find-and-replace feature within the tool.
